I remember writing the idea down. I was feeling nostalgic, having just left behind another year and entering the new millennium. My childhood seemed to be ever further away.

Writing a first draft is only a beginning, not an end. It doesn’t have to be perfect the first time through, like I’d always imagined.

If the ending doesn’t come in the first draft, I haven’t learned enough about my characters yet. I need to have more conversations with them.
